Sugar Ray Leonard's restraining order against his son, Daniel, is no longer in effect after both men failed to appear for a hearing.
When neither Leonard nor his son showed up in Santa Monica court for a scheduled hearing on Monday (June 15), the judge dissolved the temporary restraining order and dismissed the case.
The protective order itself had been granted on May 20 after Leonard filed court documents describing years of alleged physical confrontations, substance abuse, and theft at the family's Pacific Palisades home.
In handwritten declarations, Leonard described two specific incidents: a May 19 altercation in which he wrote Daniel "pushed me and got ugly," and Daniel's return to the property the following morning in apparent violation of an emergency protection order.
The second incident ended in an arrest. Security at the Pacific Palisades residence called 911 after Daniel allegedly attempted to enter the home by turning exterior door handles, and officers located him near the pool house.
Police took Daniel into custody at approximately 5:29 a.m. on May 20 in West Los Angeles. Jail records show he was released two days later.
Leonard's court filings painted a portrait of a family in prolonged crisis. He alleged Daniel had wrecked five of the family's cars over the past year, overdosed four times with two hospitalizations requiring resuscitation, and stole money and valuables on a continuous basis. Leonard put the substance abuse struggle at "seven or eight years at least."
In one handwritten declaration, Leonard wrote, "His behavior has gotten worse every day. We haven't had a day of peace in 9 years, which is the reality of his addiction! Scared for my family!"
Leonard had requested that Daniel remain at least 100 yards from him, his wife Bernadette Robi, his daughter Camille, and the family's Pacific Palisades property. A judge approved the order but indicated additional documentation was needed before Camille could be added as a protected party.
With the case now dismissed, Leonard has the option to refile.
