A University of Alabama at Birmingham football player was arrested Saturday after allegedly stabbing two teammates inside the program's Football Operations Center just hours before the Blazers were set to take the field.

According to WVTM13, the attack occurred late Saturday morning at the team's facility on Sixth Avenue South. Emergency responders arrived to find two players suffering from stab wounds, and both were taken to UAB Hospital in stable condition. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

UAB confirmed the incident in a statement, expressing relief that the players are recovering and reiterating that student safety remains the institution's top concern.

"We're grateful to report that two players injured in an incident this morning at the Football Operations Building are in stable condition," read the statement. "Our thoughts are with them and their families as they recover. The suspect, another player, remains in custody, and an investigation is taking place. The team elected to play today's game. UAB's top priority remains the safety and well-being of all of our students. Given patient privacy and the ongoing investigation, we have no further comment at this time."

The university has not released the names of the injured players or the suspect due to privacy and the ongoing investigation. However, jail records show that 20-year-old Daniel Israel Mincey, a UAB football player, was booked into the Jefferson County Jail at 12:40 p.m. Saturday. According to the inmate listing, Mincey is charged with aggravated assault and attempted murder, and is being held as a pretrial inmate with no bond currently listed. The record notes he was arrested by UAB Campus Police.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed Mincey's charges are directly tied to Saturday's stabbings, but the timing and details match the incident described by UAB officials earlier in the day.

Despite the violence, UAB's game against South Florida proceeded as scheduled at Protective Stadium later that afternoon after players elected to move forward.

An investigation is active and ongoing, led by UAB Police and Public Safety. Complex reached out to both the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and the UAB Police Department for additional comment and will update this story if they respond.
