Ja Morant has been suspended for one game due to conduct detrimental to the team, the Memphis Grizzlies announced on Saturday.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the decision stems from a postgame confrontation between Morant and first-year head coach Tuomas Iisalo following the Grizzlies’ 117-112 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night (Oct. 31). Sources say Iisalo challenged Morant’s leadership and effort, prompting a response from Morant that team officials deemed “inappropriate.”

The exchange reportedly took place in front of the team inside the locker room, adding tension to an already rocky start for Memphis this season.

Morant struggled in the Lakers loss, scoring a season-low eight points on 3-of-14 shooting while adding seven assists. After the game, he appeared frustrated when speaking with reporters.

“According to [the coaching staff], probably don’t play me, honestly,” Morant said postgame. “That’s basically what the message was. It’s cool.”

When pressed further about his performance, Morant replied, “Go ask the coaching staff,” without elaborating.

Morant is averaging a career-low 28.5 minutes per game through six appearances, raising questions about his role under Iisalo, who took over after Taylor Jenkins was fired late last season. Jenkins’ dismissal reportedly stemmed from concerns that he had lost control of the locker room.

The latest incident suggests that Memphis’ locker room dynamics has been fragile under new leadership. Iisalo did not comment on the suspension.

Morant will miss Sunday’s matchup against the Toronto Raptors.
