Greg Gumbel, legendary sports broadcaster, has died. He was 78 years old.
On Friday, Gumbel's wife Marcy and daughter Michelle confirmed the news of his death with a statement. The family wrote Gumbel died following a battle with cancer.
"It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved husband and father, Greg Gumbel. He passed away peacefully surrounded by much love after a courageous battle with cancer," Gumbel's family wrote. "Greg approached his illness like one would expect he would, with stoicism, grace, and positivity. He leaves behind a legacy of love, inspiration and dedication to over 50 extraordinary years in the sports broadcast industry;andhis iconic voice will never be forgotten. Greg's memory will forever be treasured by his family, dearest friends, colleagues and all who loved him. — Marcy & Michelle Gumbel"
Gumbel was a play-by-play announcer and studio host for CBS Sports starting in 1989 when he hosted The NFL Today and covered various Super Bowls. In 1994, Gumbel joined NBC Sports and continued carving out his legendary career, hosting The NFL on NBC, Baseball Night in America, and The NBA on NBC.
He has also provided coverage for the Olympics, the NCAA, ESPN, and more. Last year, Gumbel celebrated 50 years in broadcasting.
