Derek Jeter and Jimmy Butler Are Facing Off — But Not in the Sport You'd Think

Baseball and basketball take a back seat as the two legends collide at a celebrity-backed padel tournament in Miami.

When most people think about Derek Jeter and Jimmy Butler, baseball diamonds and basketball courts come to mind. But later this week, the two sports legends are going head-to-head in padel, the fast-growing racket sport that’s picked up celebrity fans from David Beckham to Shakira.

On Monday, January 19, Sports Illustrated reported that the five-time World Series champion and the six-time NBA All-Star will serve as opposing team captains at Reserve Cup Miami 2026, setting up Team Jeter vs. Team Butler.

The three-day tournament runs January 22-24 at the Reserve Miami Seaplane Base, featuring “the world's top-ranked padel players” competing for a $600,000 prize pool — the largest in the sport's history.

For anyone in the dark, padel is essentially the lovechild of tennis and squash, a fast-paced doubles sport played on a smaller court where the walls are part of the action. It’s competitive, social, and a little chaotic by design, which may be why it’s taken off worldwide, with participation often estimated at around 25 million players.

“The momentum behind padel is unlike anything we’ve seen in recent years,” Reserve Padel Founder and CEO Wayne Boich said in a statement, pointing to the 2026 event as a sign of how far the sport has come and how much bigger it’s about to get.

Jeter, who captained a team at last year's event, is ready for round two. "Wayne has built something special," the 51-year-old Baseball Hall of Famer said. "You can feel the momentum around the game right now, and Reserve is at the center of that growth."

Butler, meanwhile, has been tied to Reserve Cup since its inaugural Miami event in 2024, making his return feel less random and more full-circle. He even popped up at the tournament’s draft and welcome dinner in January 2025, just weeks before the Miami Heat traded him to the Golden State Warriors. Now he’s back in Miami again — just not in a Heat jersey.

"Reserve Cup 2026 is the perfect mix of competition and passion," Butler, 36, said. "Going up against Jeter adds another layer, but at the end of the day it's about the game, the energy, and showing up ready to compete."

According to the official press release, last year's Reserve Cup Miami drew an A-list crowd including Zac Efron, Nick Bosa, Paul Pogba, and Andrew Schulz.
