Lil Wayne has come on the defense of Bill Belichick in wake of the announcement that he has been hired as the next head coach of North Carolina's football program.
Wayne seemingly chose to speak out after noticing an overwhelmingly negative response to Belichick's hiring. The 42-year-old rapper and NFL GameDay Morning guest analyst ascribes the negativity to people being envious or just unwilling to be complimentary towards the former New England Patriots head coach.
"Man much respect 2da GOAT coach Bill Belichick!," he wrote. "Not sure why they're all hatin but I believe it to be envy and just a bunch of folks that don't know how to simply say 'congratulations' or nada! A wise man once said "u can luv me or hate me, I swear it wont make me or break me."
During his introductory news conference earlier today, Belichick confessed that it is "a dream come true" to return to the school where his father served as an assistant coach from 1953 to 1955.
"It just never really worked out," Belichick said, according to ESPN. "Had some good years in the NFL, so that was OK, but this is a dream come true. I grew up in college football with my dad. As a kid, all I knew was college football."
Belichick explained he loves coaching and everything that comes with it, from interacting with the players to building a team to putting together a weekly game plan. "It beats working," he said. "My dad told us, 'When you love what you do, it's not work.' I love what I do."
Even though he is currently second on the NFL's all-time wins list with 333, Belichick stressed his commitment to coaching at North Carolina and not pursuing the record of 347 wins, held by Don Shula. "I didn't come here to leave," he said. "I feel like doing it a long time. I'm good to go."
At 72 years old, Belichick is the oldest head coach in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision.
