Practically every NBA player's game has been inspired by someone from the past. J.R. Smith, on the other hand, doesn't just learn from former greats, he also draws from the popular basketball video game NBA 2K.
Following the Cleveland Cavaliers' 99-84 loss to the Toronto Raptors in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals, Smith and LeBron James were asked about Bismack Biymobo's finger wag during the contest, a clear homage to the originator of the gesture, Dikembe Mutombo. James responded by admitting that his fadeaway shot came from Michael Jordan while his no-look passes were inspired by Magic Johnson.
Then, LeBron referenced Swish's three-point shot, telling reporters, "He shoots fadeaway threes, I don't know who he gets those from." It was a verbal alley-oop from James and after a dramatic pause, J.R. didn't disappoint, playfully responding, "2K."
After shooting just 40 percent from downtown in the regular season, Smith has improved to 47.6 percent in the playoffs. And it's all because the 30-year-old has mastered the art of letting the ball come off his fingers at the height of his jump while consistently aiming for a green release shot. Or, you know, something like that.
We've said it time and time again, but never change, Swish. While most players in the league continue to give the same, generic responses, J.R. dares to be different, and we love every minute of it.
