Ricky Pearsall, rookie wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers, was shot on Saturday, Aug. 31, in an attempted robbery.

San Francisco's Mayor London Breed and the 49ers confirmed the news. In an X post, the football team said Pearsall "sustained a bullet wound to the chest and is in serious but stable condition."

The robbery took place in San Francisco's Union Square. Pearsall and a 17-year-old suspect were injured after getting into a physical altercation. The unnamed suspect is awaiting charges and is currently in San Francisco General Hospital being treated for injuries.

According to San Francisco Police Chief William Scott, there is "no indication" that Pearsall was targeted for his status as a professional football player. Earlier in the day, he attended an autograph signing. A charging decision is expected to be made next week as the suspect is a juvenile.
