Egypt landed its first-ever win at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and it’s cause for celebration.
On Sunday (June 21), Egypt defeated New Zealand 3-1, with former Liverpool legend Mo Salah scoring the first goal in the 67th minute.
A viral clip shows Salah and his teammates taking to the streets of Vancouver to celebrate the team making history. At one point, Salah was hoisted on a teammate’s shoulders as the group continued its reverie.
In addition to Salah, Mostafa Zico and Trézéguet scored during Sunday’s game.
“We were lucky to win the game today. I think it was a better game. We played against a tough team and a tough group, so now we are on top of the group. And we just need to celebrate … and just focus on the last game,” Salah told The New York Times.
With Egypt’s latest win, the team has moved to the top of the standings in Group G. However, their spot isn’t guaranteed. Egypt’s game against Iran on Friday in Seattle will be the deciding factor, with Egypt needing at least a draw to move forward, per ESPN.
Egypt hasn’t played in a World Cup since 2018, when the tournament was held in Russia. This year marks the country’s fourth appearance after missing Qatar in 2022.
