During a wrestling match in San Jose last month, California high school wrestler Blake Flovin says he contracted the herpes virus from a mat. He was eventually diagnosed with herpes galdiatorum, which is caused by the virus, and he is currently dealing with lesions on his face. As a result, his high school wrestling career is over, and he’s now pushing for the state of California to postpone a tournament this weekend to prevent others from being affected by herpes.

Florin believes he contracted herpes during a match at Independence High School in San Jose. Herpes is apparently very common in the wrestling community, and there have been lots of other reports of herpes outbreaks taking place at the high school level. However, despite Flovin’s suggestion that this weekend’s state tournament be postponed, it sounds like the tournament is going to take place as scheduled with doctors on hand to evaluate wrestlers.

Check out the clip above to hear Flovin talk about why he feels the state should postpone the tournament to avoid a herpes outbreak. Who knew that this was one of the risks associated with wrestling?!
