Kansas City Chiefs stars Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes are facing a legal challenge stemming from their off-field business venture.

According to USA Today, the duo’s steakhouse, 1587 Prime, has been named in a federal trademark lawsuit filed by a sneaker company that claims the restaurant’s branding is stepping on its territory.

According to court filings submitted on February 17 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, footwear brand 1587 Sneakers alleges that the name “1587 Prime” creates confusion among consumers and infringes on its existing brand identity.

The company is asking the court to block the restaurant from continuing to use the name and to seek damages.

The dispute centers on timing and usage. 1587 Sneakers says it began selling apparel and footwear under the “1587” name on April 13, 2023, establishing what it describes as “first use” in commerce.

That claim is key to its argument under trademark law, particularly as it relates to common law rights. The brand later filed for federal trademark protection in October 2025, though that application is still pending.

Meanwhile, Kelce and Mahomes’ steakhouse opened in September 2025. The name “1587 Prime” is a nod to their jersey numbers—15 and 87—and the business filed its own trademark application earlier, in December 2023, within the restaurant and hospitality category.

The lawsuit argues that, despite operating in different industries, an overlap exists because the restaurant also sells branded merchandise. That, the sneaker company claims, increases the likelihood that customers may assume a connection between the two brands.

The complaint also states that some consumers have already reached out under the impression that the businesses are affiliated.

1587 Sneakers, founded by Adam King and Sam Hyun, says its name carries cultural significance, referencing the year associated with the earliest recorded presence of Filipinos in what is now the United States. The brand also points to national sales and media exposure as evidence of its reach.
