Sugar Ray Leonard is dealing with a deeply personal family matter after his youngest son, Daniel Leonard, was arrested early Wednesday morning in Los Angeles for allegedly violating a restraining order connected to the boxing legend’s home.
The Los Angeles Police Department told TMZ that officers responded to a call on the 1500 block of Amalfi Drive in West Los Angeles around 5:30 a.m. after receiving reports of a restraining order violation at a private residence. Police later confirmed that Daniel Leonard, 25, was taken into custody at the scene.
The outlet also confirmed that security personnel at the property contacted authorities after Daniel allegedly attempted to access the home by trying exterior door handles before officers located him near a pool house on the property.
Court records indicate that a restraining order had recently been filed involving the former boxing champion and his son. A hearing connected to the matter is scheduled for June 15. Representatives for neither Leonard nor his son had publicly commented as of this writing.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest boxers in history, Leonard compiled a 36-3-1 professional record and won world titles across multiple weight classes during a career that stretched from the late 1970s through the 1990s.
Beyond boxing, Leonard became one of the sport’s most recognizable crossover stars, appearing in commercials, television projects, and charity initiatives long after retiring in 1997.
Publicly, the father-son relationship had appeared close in recent years. The two were photographed together at several entertainment and charity events, including the 2024 CHLA Gala in Los Angeles. In a 2023 social media post celebrating Daniel’s birthday, Leonard wrote, “So happy to be with my son Daniel this weekend! I am so proud of you!!! Happy Birthday!!!”
Daniel is the youngest of Leonard’s four children. Leonard shares sons Ray Charles Jr. and Jarrel with ex-wife Juanita Wilkinson, while Daniel and daughter Camille were born during his marriage to wife Bernadette Robi, whom he married in 1993.
Ray Charles Jr. has since built his own career in the sports business as the founder and CEO of Leonard Sports and Entertainment.
Leonard is also a grandfather to Devin Leonard.
