Shaquille O'Neal is stepping in to support the family of a 12-year-old Georgia girl whose death has sparked national attention, offering to cover her funeral expenses following a fatal altercation at a school bus stop.
Authorities told ABC 7 Los Angeles that the victim, Jada West, was involved in a fight with another student near her neighborhood intersection in Villa Rica, about 30 miles west of Atlanta.
The incident occurred on March 5, and according to police, the sixth grader collapsed shortly after the altercation. She was transported to a hospital, where she died days later.
Attorneys representing Jada’s family have indicated there were prior concerns about bullying leading up to the incident, though those claims have not been formally verified by investigators. Video of the fight has circulated widely online, intensifying calls for accountability and raising questions about whether the situation could have been prevented.
The Douglas County School System described Jada as “an upbeat, kind, and vibrant student,” and confirmed that counseling services have been made available to students and staff. Officials also noted that the incident did not occur on school property or during school hours.
The case remains under investigation, with officials still determining whether to file charges.
O’Neal, who currently serves as chief of community relations for the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, according to Sporting News, learned about the case through media coverage and quickly moved to assist.
The former Los Angeles Lakers star has long maintained ties to law enforcement and community outreach initiatives, often using his platform to respond to tragedies affecting families and children.
“This story touched my heart the moment I saw it in the media,” O’Neal said in a statement. “As a father, my heart goes out to Jada’s family. No parent should ever have to bury their child, and if there is anything I can do to ease even a small part of that burden, then it is the right thing to do.”
He added that the broader community should come together with “love, support, and compassion” during the family’s time of grief.
Local law enforcement, including Douglas County Sheriff Tim Pounds, has partnered with O’Neal to support the family. “When a child’s life is taken so tragically, it affects all of us,” Pounds said.
