Robert Griffin III is stepping back onto the field—just not the one most people expected. The former NFL quarterback has received an invitation to USA Football’s national team training camps, putting him in the mix for a spot on the 2026 Team USA flag football roster ahead of this summer’s world championships in Germany.

Per Reuters, the invite follows a strong showing at recent team trials, where Griffin earned one of 24 spots for the first men’s training camp set for April 16–19 in Chula Vista, California. A second session in May will further narrow the pool before a final evaluation in June.

From there, USA Football will select a 12-player roster and alternates to compete at the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) World Championships in Düsseldorf from August 13–16.

Flag football’s rising profile has drawn serious talent, and Griffin enters a competitive field. The current U.S. quarterback, Darrell “Hush” Doucette III, recently led Team USA on an undefeated run at the Fanatics Flag Football Classic in Los Angeles, where the team defeated squads associated with names like Tom Brady and Joe Burrow.

The national team scored on nearly every possession across those games.

Griffin’s return to competition comes years after his NFL career slowed following injuries. The 2011 Heisman Trophy winner out of Baylor was selected No. 2 overall in the 2012 draft and earned Offensive Rookie of the Year honors during his debut season.

He later played for Cleveland and Baltimore, finishing his career with over 9,000 passing yards and more than 1,800 rushing yards before moving into a broadcasting role with Fox Sports.

Off the field, the past year has included a close call. In October 2025, Griffin and his family were involved in a multi-vehicle crash in Fort Worth, Texas.

He described it on social media as the “worst car accident of our lives,” adding that their vehicle hit a highway divider multiple times. “Thankful to God that my wife and kids are safe,” he wrote.
