Just months after questions surfaced about his recovery from a devastating knee injury, Patrick Mahomes is once again making NFL history—this time with his contract. According to ESPN, the Kansas City Chiefs and Mahomes have finalized a reworked agreement that adds two years to his existing deal, keeping him under contract through 2033. The new pact carries a total value of $504.75 million, making it the first contract in NFL history to cross the half-billion-dollar threshold.

While the quarterback originally signed a four-year rookie contract worth $16.4 million after being drafted in 2017, everything changed in 2020 when he landed a groundbreaking 10-year, $450 million extension. At the time, it was viewed as one of the most ambitious deals professional football had ever seen.

Now, six years later, the Chiefs have revisited the contract once again to keep pace with a rapidly changing quarterback market. Under the new structure, the additional money amounts to $239.05 million, while the overall deal now spans from 2026 through 2033.

The first four years are reportedly guaranteed at signing, and contract mechanisms are designed to ultimately guarantee the full $504.75 million. Incentives and escalators could push the total earnings to $522.25 million.

Beginning in 2027, the reworked deal is expected to average $64 million per season, setting a new NFL record for annual value.

The extension arrives at a pivotal moment for both Mahomes and the organization. Earlier this offseason, Kansas City restructured his contract to create more than $43 million in salary cap relief, lowering his 2026 cap hit while pushing money into future seasons. That move fueled speculation that a larger renegotiation could eventually follow. It did.

Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt praised the quarterback's impact on and off the field.

"Over the last decade Patrick has become one of the most iconic, beloved sports figures of all time," Hunt said. "He has helped lead our franchise to five Super Bowl appearances and three championships."

Head coach Andy Reid echoed those sentiments.

"It's great," Reid said. "[Mahomes] has done a great job as a professional, and then off the field as a father and husband. You get the whole package there."
