The New York City streets around Madison Square Garden transformed into a sea of blue and orange Wednesday night, June 3, as the NYPD oversaw one of the largest public gatherings of the city's historic playoff run, allowing thousands of fans to gather outside the arena for a Game 1 watch party after previously raising concerns about similar events.
With an estimated 18,000 fans packed inside Madison Square Garden and an estimated 10,000 more gathered in designated viewing zones on West 33rd Street, the city moved forward with a heavily managed outdoor celebration as the New York Knicks opened the NBA Finals with a 105-95 win over the San Antonio Spurs. Per The New York Daily News, the event marked a significant shift from the NYPD's earlier position, when officials had recommended against additional watch parties following crowd-control issues during previous playoff games.
The atmosphere reflected just how much the Knicks' return to the Finals has energized New York. The franchise had not reached the championship round since 1999, ending a 27-year drought that has turned every playoff game into a citywide event. Beyond Madison Square Garden, fans also gathered at Central Park's SummerStage, while local agencies and public figures embraced the excitement surrounding the team's postseason run.
The city's enthusiasm has extended well beyond basketball. Earlier this week, New York City's sanitation department joined the fun by adding a Finals-themed joke to its website. Users who searched for "Spurs" in the department's disposal database were greeted with a Knicks-themed message that read, "Go New York, go New York, GO! Here's hoping for a clean sweep!"
Despite the celebratory atmosphere, police reported several incidents during the watch party. Eight people were taken into custody, including three individuals accused of obstructing an ambulance near Madison Square Garden.
According to authorities, two people allegedly climbed onto the vehicle, while another incident resulted in an NYPD chief being punched while attempting to remove a fan from the ambulance. Five additional attendees received criminal court summonses for disorderly conduct.
