Russell Wilson’s path back to the NFL just became more complicated.
According to The New York Post, the New York Giants added another quarterback to the mix on Monday, April 13, signing veteran Brandon Allen in a move that further distances the franchise from Wilson, who opened the 2025 season as the team’s starter before falling out of the rotation.
Allen, 33, joins a quarterback room already led by Jaxson Dart and Jameis Winston. The Giants appear to be prioritizing experience behind Dart, whose aggressive style led to multiple injuries last season, including the concussion he suffered against the Chicago Bears in November 2025.
That injury was one of the turning points in the Giants’ season. When Dart exited against Chicago, Wilson briefly returned to the field after weeks on the bench. The veteran completed three of seven passes for 45 yards as New York lost its fourth-quarter lead.
Within days, interim head coach Mike Kafka named Winston the starter instead.
At the time, Kafka praised Winston’s presence in the locker room and his experience. “I think Jameis has done a great job since he’s been here,” Kafka said. “He’s a great leader, he has a lot of production in this league.”
Wilson, meanwhile, made clear that he was not ready to walk away from either the Giants or football. After being passed over for the starting job, he told reporters, “I want to see it through. I haven’t asked for my release or anything like that. I want to be here. … I still want to keep playing football. I love it, obviously, and I feel like I still got it.”
Wilson entered free agency after the season and remains unsigned. Recent reports have linked him to teams seeking veteran depth, including the Kansas City Chiefs, who may need insurance while Patrick Mahomes recovers from a torn ACL.
Wilson was also listed among the top remaining quarterbacks available in free agency alongside Aaron Rodgers and Kirk Cousins.
The Giants, however, have continued to move in another direction. Wilson started the first three games of the 2025 season before being replaced by Dart in Week 4. Across six appearances, he threw for 831 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions.
