A courtside collision between former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg and Jose Alvarado became one of the most talked-about moments of the NBA Playoffs, but the 84-year-old billionaire appeared more amused than concerned after the unexpected encounter.
According to People, the incident unfolded during the fourth quarter of Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden when Alvarado chased a loose ball near the sideline. The hustling Knicks guard launched himself into the front row and landed directly in Bloomberg’s courtside seating area. The play immediately drew attention from fans, broadcasters, and nearby spectators as arena staff rushed over, and Alvarado stopped to make sure Bloomberg was okay.
Fortunately, there were no injuries. Bloomberg quickly signaled that he was fine, while comedian Dave Chappelle, who was seated nearby, also checked on the former mayor following the crash.
Within minutes, the moment had spread across social media, where fans flooded timelines with jokes, memes, and reactions to one of the most unusual celebrity-player interactions of the postseason.
Bloomberg leaned into the humor the following day. Posting on X, he referenced the viral play while giving Alvarado a friendly shoutout. “Great to meet NYC’s homegrown star, @AlvaradoJose15,” Bloomberg wrote. “But next time, Jose, just call me. Let’s go Knicks!”
The former mayor’s camp confirmed there was no lasting damage from the collision. A spokesperson later told USA Today that Bloomberg was physically “fine” after the play, before delivering another basketball-themed punchline: “The only pain is from the Knicks’ loss last night.”
That comment reflected the mood inside Madison Square Garden after New York fell 115-111 to the Spurs, ending a 13-game winning streak.
The game itself drew a packed celebrity crowd. Among those in attendance were Timothée Chalamet, Tina Fey, Spike Lee, and Tracy Morgan.
The Knicks will once again take on the Spurs later this evening.
