The investigation into the shooting of New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd has reached a new phase, as the NYPD confirmed that a person of interest is now in custody.

Law enforcement sources told NBC News that the individual connected to the November 16 shooting was apprehended in Buffalo with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service, and that the NYPD was directly involved in the operation.

Authorities have not released the individual’s name, and no charges have been announced as of this writing.

Boyd, 29, was critically wounded in the early morning hours outside Sei Less, an Asian fusion restaurant near Seventh Avenue and West 38th Street in Midtown Manhattan.

He was struck once during a confrontation outside the venue and later transported to the hospital with a gunshot wound that entered through his abdomen and became lodged in his right lung.

Boyd has since undergone multiple surgeries and remains under medical supervision following complications related to the injury.

In prior briefings, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny outlined what investigators believe led to the shooting. According to police, Boyd was with two New York Jets teammates and a friend when a separate group began verbally confronting them outside the restaurant. The comments allegedly focused on Boyd’s clothing and appearance.

After briefly entering the restaurant and deciding to leave due to discomfort, Boyd’s group reencountered the same individuals, at which point the situation escalated, and shots were fired.

As part of the investigation, the NYPD released surveillance footage of a suspected shooter, prompting a tip through CrimeStoppers. Kenny said that the tip led detectives to identify a potential suspect through prior law enforcement contact.

While probable cause had not yet been established, Kenny stated that investigators were closing in on the person responsible.

Another element under review is a luxury item recovered near the scene: a $185,000 watch that has not been claimed by Boyd or any of the players present.

Police previously stated there was no indication of a robbery and emphasized that no one reported an attempt to steal property from the Jets players. Detectives have treated the watch as a possible clue rather than a confirmed motive.

Boyd has continued to update supporters throughout his recovery. After initially being released from the hospital, he later revealed he had to return due to ongoing health issues, writing on social media, “Head HIGH, God is not through with me yet!”
