Five-time NBA All-Star John Wall is stepping into a new chapter—this time off the court. The former No. 1 overall pick has been named president of basketball operations at Howard University, marking a high-profile return to Washington and a significant move for one of the country’s top HBCU programs.
According to ESPN, Wall has already begun taking a hands-on approach in his new role. He’s actively involved in team meetings, evaluating recruits and transfer prospects, and helping shape the program’s long-term vision.
His responsibilities extend beyond the court, touching everything from roster construction to NIL opportunities, revenue-sharing strategy, and player mentorship.
Wall’s connection to D.C. runs deep. After being selected first overall in the 2010 NBA Draft, he spent a decade with the Washington Wizards, becoming the face of the franchise during his prime.
Wall’s interest in front-office work began to take shape earlier this year when he served as Howard’s honorary captain for a game on January 31. During that visit, he expressed a desire to eventually hold a president of basketball operations role at the NBA level.
Howard’s recent on-court success adds weight to the legendary hire. The program has quietly become one of the most competitive in its tier, reaching the NCAA tournament three times in the past four seasons and securing its first-ever tournament win this year. Wall will work alongside head coach Kenny Blakeney and general manager Daniel Marks to build on that momentum.
His transition mirrors a growing trend of NBA stars stepping into administrative roles at the college level. Stephen Curry recently joined Davidson as an assistant GM, while Trae Young took on a similar position at Oklahoma.
