Jason Whitlock is facing fresh backlash after unloading on Angel Reese during a recent episode of Fearless, where he accused the Atlanta Dream forward of building her fame through trolling, race-based controversy, and her rivalry with Caitlin Clark rather than basketball talent.
“Angel Reese epitomizes everything that’s wrong with Black culture,” Whitlock said during the May 18 episode. “Everything is just a troll job of white people. It’s not about so-called ‘Black excellence.’ It’s ‘can I annoy white people?’” He continued by claiming Reese became popular because “she trolled Caitlin Clark,” later adding, “Angel Reese is the most brutal basketball player. The most unskilled alleged ‘star’ we’ve ever seen.”
The comments reignited the debate around the media’s obsession with the Reese-Clark rivalry, which exploded during the 2023 NCAA Tournament and later followed both players into the WNBA.
Reese, one of the league’s most marketable young stars, has landed major endorsement deals and built a massive social media following while becoming one of the most discussed players in women’s basketball.
Clark, meanwhile, entered the league with record-breaking viewership numbers and unprecedented attention around the Indiana Fever.
Whitlock has spent months publicly hammering Reese, repeatedly calling her game “trash” and arguing that her celebrity status is inflated. On multiple episodes of Fearless, he’s criticized her scoring efficiency, rebounding style, and overall skill set, often contrasting her popularity with Clark’s on-court production.
He has also described Reese as “arguably the most overrated athlete in all of sports” and accused the sports media ecosystem of pushing her as a counterweight to Clark.
His latest remarks go even further, framing Reese’s popularity as part of a larger cultural issue. “Black people love her because she trolled Caitlin Clark,” Whitlock said. “And that’s enough for Black people and Black culture.”
He also mocked Reese for allegedly viewing herself alongside WNBA stars like A’ja Wilson, questioning why she occupies “this delusional space” as a superstar athlete.
The controversy arrives during an already chaotic stretch for Whitlock, who has spent the past several months escalating public feuds and culture-war commentary across sports media.
