Caitlin Clark gave fans a brief scare on Thursday, April 30, after exiting the Indiana Fever preseason matchup against the Dallas Wings following a hard collision in the third quarter. The star guard later downplayed the moment, signaling she avoided anything serious.
According to ESPN, the play unfolded when Dallas forward Alanna Smith made contact with Clark’s leg during a shot attempt, sending her to the floor. After a review resulted in a flagrant 1 call, Clark stepped to the line, knocked down two free throws, and then headed to the bench, where she remained for the rest of the game.
Despite the visual concern, Clark reassured reporters postgame: “I feel good. I just landed on my kneecap really hard.”
Before the incident, the 24-year-old looked fully back in rhythm in her return to Gainbridge Fieldhouse. She poured in 21 points in just 16 minutes, including a dominant 14-point opening quarter, flashing the form that made her one of the WNBA’s most impactful young stars.
Her presence once again drove fan turnout, with No. 22 jerseys filling the arena for her first home appearance in more than nine months.
“I thought the refs were great,” Clark said when addressing the physicality of the game and the increased whistle, adding that preseason adjustments are expected to smooth out.
Head coach Stephanie White indicated the team had already planned to limit Clark’s minutes, calling her removal “an extra precaution” rather than a reaction to the collision.
After an ironwoman run through college at the University of Iowa and a fully healthy rookie campaign, her 2025 season unraveled with multiple injuries. A right groin strain suffered in July ended her year, forcing her to miss the final stretch of the regular season and the playoffs.
That followed earlier setbacks, including a left groin sprain, two quad strains, and an ankle bone bruise—marking the first extended absence of her career.
Clark’s return to full activity earlier this year, including appearances with Team USA, had signaled a reset heading into 2026. She also recently made headlines off the court, celebrating her three-year anniversary with Connor McCaffery.
