Aaron Rodgers is officially returning to the Pittsburgh Steelers for the 2026 season after agreeing to a one-year contract worth $22 million in guaranteed money, with incentives that could push the deal to $25 million.

According to Fox News, the agreement ends months of uncertainty surrounding Rodgers’ future and locks in the quarterback for what will be his 22nd NFL season. The 42-year-old is expected to join the team immediately for offseason workouts after delaying a final decision deep into the spring.

The contract also closes the door on growing speculation that Rodgers could leave Pittsburgh entirely. In recent weeks, the Arizona Cardinals emerged as a possible landing spot after hiring Nathaniel Hackett, Rodgers’ longtime former offensive coordinator with the Green Bay Packers and New York Jets.

Rodgers also reportedly visited Pittsburgh before finalizing the agreement, with negotiations largely centered on money.

Last season, Rodgers played on a one-year, $13.65 million contract after arriving from the Jets. Pittsburgh later placed an unrestricted free-agent tender on him worth roughly $15.5 million for 2026, though reports indicated Rodgers was seeking a more competitive number after throwing for 3,322 yards and 24 touchdowns during the 2025 season.

The new deal also sets up a reunion between Rodgers and head coach Mike McCarthy, who replaced Mike Tomlin earlier this offseason. McCarthy coached Rodgers for 13 seasons in Green Bay, where the pair won Super Bowl XLV and built one of the league’s most successful quarterback-coach partnerships of the era.

Rodgers had repeatedly avoided publicly committing to another year in Pittsburgh despite remaining in contact with the organization throughout the offseason. During a recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Rodgers said there were “no deadlines” tied to negotiations and stressed that he was taking his time with the decision while enjoying the offseason with his wife.

Pittsburgh, meanwhile, made it increasingly clear it was building with Rodgers in mind. NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero previously noted that several of the team’s offseason additions aligned with Rodgers’ preferences, particularly along the offensive line and at receiver. Owner Art Rooney II also said publicly that the Steelers expected to reach a resolution.

The signing immediately changes the outlook for the AFC North heading into 2026. The Steelers now move forward with an established veteran quarterback instead of entering the season with Mason Rudolph, Will Howard, or rookie Drew Allar at the top of the depth chart.
