Amid reports that Malik Beasley is under investigation for allegedly gambling on NBA games, newly surfaced court records paint a picture of a turbulent personal and financial life—marked by mounting debts to a barber, dentist, landlord, lender, and marketing firm.
According to documents obtained by The Detroit News on Tuesday, Beasley’s financial troubles have led to wage garnishments by both the barber and the dentist, despite his recent career resurgence with the Detroit Pistons. The FBI is currently investigating the 28-year-old guard for alleged wire fraud, gambling, and placing prop bets.
While playing for the Milwaukee Bucks, Beasley was sued by Cairo Cuts, a celebrity barbershop based in Milwaukee (known for its NBA clientele). In January, the shop won a $26,827 judgment against him.
That same month, Beasley was also sued by a Minnesota-based dentist, Dr. Hassan Alshehabi of Delicate Smiles, who secured a $34,390 default judgment. In February, Alshehabi began garnishing Beasley’s Pistons paychecks to recover the debt, which remains unpaid, per court records.
In April, Beasley was sued by New York-based Hazan Sports Management Group Inc., which he allegedly fired as his agency in February. According to a federal complaint, Hazan claims Beasley failed to repay a $650,000 advance tied to future earnings from his name, image, and likeness. The agency is reportedly seeking at least $2.25 million in damages for alleged breach of contract.
The lawsuit states Hazan made "a substantial investment of time, effort, and resources in a player with known issues (including and especially financial issues)...when they took him on as a client and provided him with a substantial marketing advance in anticipation of helping Beasley become one of the premier players at his position."
Additionally, The Detroit News obtained a financing statement showing Beasley entered into an agreement with a Florida-based company that offers bridge loans to professional athletes. As part of the deal, Beasley pledged both his current and future NBA contracts as collateral.
News of the allegations against Beasley comes amid serious contract talks with the Detroit Pistons about a three-year, $42 million deal to bring him back. According to ESPN sources, those talks are now paused—presumably due to the investigation.
Last season, Beasley averaged 16.3 points per game for the Pistons.
