Trae Young's NCAA career is almost certainly over. His dazzling freshman campaign came to an end as seventh-seed Rhode Island pulled out a tough, 83-78 win in overtime against Young's 10th-seeded Oklahoma squad.
The game was back and forth and the Sooners led for much of it. The Rams keyed in on Young—it's no secret stopping him was the key to beating Oklahoma all season—but he still managed to score 28 points. He added seven assists and five rebounds.
Young made a few mistakes—he racked up six turnovers and two offensive fouls—but he came through when his team needed him. With Oklahoma down two points in the final seconds of regulation, Young drew a foul. He went two-for-two from the line.
Rhode Island had one last shot to end it in regulation, but the Rams' putback attempt just rolled out. Undeterred, Rhode Island commanded the overtime session, outscoring the Sooners 14-9.
E.C. Matthews led Rhode Island with 16 points.
Young is expected to go in the top 10 of June's NBA Draft. It would be a shock if he were to return to school.
