Tom Hanks has revealed why Woody (whom he voices) will have a shiny bald spot in Toy Story 5.
The actor gave a surprisingly realistic answer when speaking to Entertainment Weekly, which makes a lot of sense. “He has been playing with, to excess,” said Hanks about Woody’s changing appearance.
“You put a rubber hat on top of a rubber head again and again and again, something’s going to chafe,” he continued. “So yeah, he does have… let’s say a worn area on the back of his head.
It’s not just Woody’s hair (or lack of) that’s changing in Toy Story 5. Since Woody’s been a toy for so long, even his stomach has changed, too. “He is not shaped plastic,” Hanks explained. “He is made of stuffing and cloth, and that stuff settles over time.”
Elsewhere in the same interview, Joan Cusack, who voices the cowgirl toy Jessie in the film, spoke about the meaning of the movie — and even got emotional in the process.
"I know every parent in the United States worries about their kids. When do you get them involved in tech? What does that do to their brains?" she said. "And that's what this movie's about. It's about humanity and playing and loyalty — and it makes me cry."
The first trailer for Toy Story 5 came out in February, setting the stage for a battle between the toys and a touchscreen tablet.
Co-directed by Andrew Stanton and Kenna Harris, the movie picks up where the previous chapter left off. Woody is out in the world rescuing “abandoned” toys, while Jessie, Buzz, and the rest of the toys encounter a tablet named Lilypad that distracts Bonnie from them.
“Tech’s invaded our house,” Jessie tells Woody in the trailer. “I’m losing Bonnie to this device.”
Toy Story 5 comes out on June 19 in the United States.
