The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has crossed $1 billion at the global box office, becoming the first film of the year to reach that threshold, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie hit that threshold during its tenth weekend of release, with a total of $428.5 million domestically and $571.5 million internationally. It opened April 1 with a $131.7 million domestic debut, followed by a $69 million second weekend, before settling into a long, steady run across 4,252 theaters.
Produced by Universal, Illumination, and Nintendo on a reported $110 million budget, the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie ranks as the top-grossing film of 2026. Directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic returned from the original, with a voice cast led by Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Keegan-Michael Key, and Jack Black, along with newcomers Donald Glover, Glen Powell, and Benny Safdie. In addition to popular returning characters like Mario, Luigi, Bowser, and Toad, the film also introduces other fan-favorite Nintendo characters, like Rosalina, Bowser Jr., Yoshi, and Fox McCloud.
With the film’s success, the two-film Mario series has now amassed global ticket sales of $2.3 billion, making it the ninth highest-grossing animated franchise worldwide of all time.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is one of fewer than twenty animated films in history to earn more than $1 billion worldwide. Its predecessor, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, earned $1.36 billion globally in 2023.
Lionsgate's Michael is shaping up to be the next film in position to join the billion-dollar club, sitting at $888 million after its seventh weekend. It’s expected to push past $1 billion with its upcoming release in Japan.
Two other films that are predicted to join the billion dollar club soon are Disney/Pixar's upcoming Toy Story 5, with a projected domestic opening of more than $170 million, and Christopher Nolan’s much-anticipated new film The Odyssey.
