Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy movie is rapidly approaching one of the biggest milestones in modern animation. Just over a month after its theatrical debut, the film has pulled in more than $942 million worldwide, putting it within striking distance of the $1 billion mark and cementing Nintendo’s growing dominance at the global box office.
According to the latest figures provided by Box Office Mojo, Super Mario Galaxy has earned roughly $413 million domestically and another $528 million internationally. Produced on a reported $110 million budget, the animated sequel has already generated more than eight times its production cost.
The success continues Nintendo and Universal’s momentum following 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, but Super Mario Galaxy expanded the formula significantly. Instead of remaining centered in the Mushroom Kingdom, the sequel pushed deeper into Nintendo’s broader universe, introducing characters like Rosalina, Bowser Jr., Yoshi, and Star Fox pilot Fox McCloud.
The film’s crossover-heavy approach fueled ongoing comparisons to Super Smash Bros., especially after Fox’s appearance became one of the movie’s biggest talking points online.
Critics were divided on the film’s story but largely aligned on its visual presentation and fan-focused design. Much of the audience response appears to have followed that same energy, with longtime Nintendo fans embracing the movie’s rapid-fire references to Mario Kart, Pikmin, Star Fox, and classic Super Mario Galaxy locations.
The film’s cast also kept the conversation moving during the press run. Charlie Day generated headlines after joking that Luigi Mangione was his “second-favorite Luigi,” while the cast later united behind the idea of Danny DeVito voicing Wario in a future installment.
Meanwhile, Glen Powell’s role as Fox McCloud and Donald Glover’s performance as Yoshi became major discussion points among fans following the movie’s release.
Nintendo is already preparing for the next phase of the rollout. Amazon recently revealed that Super Mario Galaxy will hit digital platforms in the United States on May 18, with the 4K edition priced at $29.99.
