Even with Super Mario Galaxy expanding Nintendo’s movie universe through new characters like Rosalina, Bowser Jr., Yoshi, and Fox McCloud, one major name is still missing: Wario. Now, as fans begin wondering who could play Mario’s longtime rival in a future sequel, the cast of Super Mario Galaxy seems to have reached a clear consensus — Danny DeVito.
According to Polygon, the idea came up during recent interviews promoting the film, when the cast was asked who should voice Wario if the character were to eventually enter the franchise. Charlie Day, who voices Luigi, immediately pointed to his longtime It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-star.
“I would choose my buddy Danny DeVito,” Day said. “He’s perfect for it. He’s just so funny.”
The suggestion quickly gained support from the rest of the cast. Donald Glover called it “an excellent choice,” while joking that DeVito should simply call Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri directly.
Jack Black was equally enthusiastic, saying, “I love Danny DeVito as Wario. He’s a legend.”
Black also floated a few alternate ideas, including Pedro Pascal and an “evil” version of Chris Pratt. Meanwhile, Benny Safdie initially joked that Pratt could simply return with a mustache before joining the rest of the group in backing DeVito.
Not everyone went in the same direction. Keegan-Michael Key suggested a much more unexpected choice: Michael Shannon. Key said Shannon could bring something “very interesting” to the role after working with him on another project.
The discussion comes as Super Mario Galaxy continues to generate attention ahead of its theatrical release. Early reviews have praised the film’s animation and nonstop Nintendo references, while recent marketing has highlighted major additions to the series, including Fox McCloud’s crossover appearance and the reveal that Glen Powell voices the Star Fox pilot.
The movie also introduces Donald Glover as Yoshi and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr.
