Sinners producer Sev Ohanian has revealed that the movie technically gave viewers a peek at Marvel’s troubled Blade movie through its costumes.
He revealed during an interview with Screencrush that the costumes worn by background characters in Sinners were originally supposed to be used for Blade before production stopped on the MCU movie.
"[Costume designer] Ruth Carter was working on the Blade movie that ended up not shooting," Ohanian explained. "At one point, that movie was going to deal with, and she’s talked about this before, but at one point that film was going to deal with the past around the same era as Sinners."
"She happened to have a warehouse full of period-appropriate clothes, and it was like, 'Yo, we got to shoot this movie like tomorrow.' And Marvel was generous enough and kind enough to let us basically purchase it at price," Ohanian continued.
Additionally, Ohanian revealed that "a lot of the background actors" wore the clothes for the Blade film while Sinners' stars had their own original outfits.
Blade has had its fair share of setbacks since it was originally announced in 2019. In 2022, after the script allegedly had several rounds of rewrites, reports surfaced that attached star, Mahershala Ali, was "very frustrated" with the film’s progress. Coincidentally, around the same time, the film lost its director, Bassam Tariq, due to scheduling conflicts.
In 2023, production on Blade had to be halted due to the writers’ strike. The film was originally set to hit theaters in November of that year, before being pushed to the following September. After being pushed again to hit theaters in November of 2025, Disney removed the film from its release calendar altogether.
Though it’s had its fair share of issues, Ali remains committed to playing the legendary vampire hunter. At the New York premiere of his new film Jurassic World Rebirth, Ali gave a message to Marvel to hopefully resume the production of the film. "Call Marvel," he said. "I’m ready. Let them know I’m ready."
