'Sinners' Profits Only Dips 8 Percent During Second Box Office Weekend

The Ryan Coogler-helmed film grossed $63.5 million globally during opening weekend.

Sinners will likely top the box office for a second weekend.

Variety reports that the Ryan Coogler-helmed film pulled in $13 million on Friday, a small eight percent drop from opening week. The pic also played in more theaters this weekend, expanding from 3,308 venues to 3,347.

The vampire thriller came out ahead of Ben Affleck’s The Accountant 2, the video game adaptation Until Dawn, and Disney’s re-release of Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith. Sinners is now projected to cross $100 million at the domestic box office on Saturday (April 26).

During its opening weekend, the Michael B. Jordan-starring movie grossed $48 million domestically and $63.5 million globally, surpassing A Minecraft Movie and outshining projections to take the No. 1 spot. “Daily holds have been terrific through the past week,” the outlet writes.

Variety is singing a different tune this weekend after celebrities—including Ben Stiller and Patrick Schwarzenegger—slammed the outlet for posting a tweet that appeared to minimize Sinners’ box office success.

“It's a great result for an original, R-rated horror film, yet the Warner Bros. release has a $90 million price tag before global marketing expenses, so profitability remains a ways away,” Variety tweeted earlier this week.

Stiller quote-tweeted Variety, writing, “In what universe does a 60 million dollar opening for an original studio movie warrant this headline?”

Schwarzenegger took a more snarky approach, writing, “It’s opening weekend …”

Directed, written, and co-produced by Coogler, Sinners is set in 1932 in the Mississippi Delta, where twin brothers, Elijah "Smoke" Moore and Elias "Stack" Moore, both played by Jordan, return to their hometown to start fresh, but end up encountering supernatural forces.

The film also stars Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, Li Jun Li, Buddy Guy, and Delroy Lindo.
