A student who has survived the Brown University shooting that killed two people and injured nine has revealed that she was also a student in Parkland, Florida, when a 2018 shooting left 17 people dead.
Zoe Weissman, 20, spoke about the eerie and terrifying reality of living through two mass shootings to MS NOW.
"I’m really angry. I’m really angry that this is happening to me all over again. And I’m just in shock," Weissman told the outlet. “I think, mentally, I feel like I’m 12 again. This feels exactly how I felt in 2018."
Weissman said this situation isn't unique to her, as there are a growing number of students who have survived multiple shootings.
"There’s already students who survived the school shooting in Oxford in Michigan, and then went to Michigan State and survived another school shooting,” she said.
“This isn’t a new phenomenon, and we’re going to get to a point where there’s [more] people like myself who survived two of these,” she concluded.
The shooting took place on Saturday (Dec. 13) at Brown University’s Barus & Holley building, where engineering and physics classes are held. At the time of the incident, students were either preparing for their exams or heading home for winter break.
A person of interest in the shooting was taken into custody around 3:45 a.m. on Sunday at a hotel in Coventry, Rhode Island, according to law enforcement sources.
At the time they were detained, the person was allegedly in possession of two guns.
"We have detained a person of interest," said Providence Mayor Brett Smiley at a Sunday morning news conference. "We are lifting the shelter-in-place."
Rhode Island law enforcement authorities confirmed that they’re seeking no one else for the shooting. According to sources, a tip from the public led authorities to the location where the person was detained.
In the wake of the shooting, Brown University announced that it was canceling its remaining fall semester classes.
