Taika Waititi to Direct New 'Star Wars' Movie

As expected, Star Wars fans got some top-tier news on the future of the franchise for May the 4th.

Taika Waititi—who recently bagged an Oscar for Jojo Rabbit—will direct a new Star Wars feature film for theatrical release. Waititi will co-write the movie with Oscar nominee Krysty Wilson-Cairns, known for her work on 1917 and Last Night in Soho.

Waititi's Star Wars credentials already include The Mandalorian, as both director and voice actor. A release date for the new project, the title for which remains unknown, has not been announced.

Monday also saw word that Russian Doll's Leslye Headland is now developing a new Star Wars series for the Disney+ platform. Headland will write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner for the untitled series.

The Mandalorian, per Monday's report, is currently in post-production on its second season. Fans can also look forward to two additional Disney+ series that aim at further expanding the already well-expanded universe first brought to life by George Lucas. One new series will focus on the pre-Rogue One events of Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), while the other centers on Obi-Wan Kenobi's life between the Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope eras.

Last month, during an IG Live chat with Tessa Thompson, Waititi gave an update on another one of his imminent projects (Thor: Love and Thunder) in the form of a faux script that trolled fans with details including major characters being brought back from the dead.

Waititi first blessed Lucasfilm's parent company Disney by helming Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok in 2017.
