The Odyssey is practically guaranteed to go down as a landmark theatrical event, with advance ticket sales already providing a glimpse at just how high the demand is for something new from Christopher Nolan.
This time, Nolan is turning to Homer’s classic epic with a cast led by Matt Damon, and the sheer scope of the project—thanks largely to the source material being among the most difficult to successfully adapt for cinema—means that the Oscar-winning filmmaker is pulling out all possible stops while promoting his Oppenheimer follow-up.
Not unlike Oppenheimer, which found itself inextricably linked to Greta Gerwig’s Barbie thanks to their simultaneous releases in the summer of 2023, a key facet of the hype has been discussions among Nolan fans about which format might best serve the material.
Now, joining that conversation are the cast members themselves, with Odyssey distributor Universal Pictures also launching a special website that enables visitors to experience the differences in each format.
The site, seen here, gives users the chance to view a trailer for the film in all available formats, including IMAX (1.90:1 aspect ratio) and 70mm (2.20:1 aspect ratio), just to name a couple.
Meanwhile, Damon and other Odyssey stars—including Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, and Tom Holland—have all been enlisted to share brief testimonials in support of different formats.
Zendaya, for example, touts Dolby Cinema as “an experience all its own,” praising its “range of brightness and color.”
For 35mm, Pattinson takes the proverbial mic, underscoring the format’s “classic” status.
Regardless of how you choose to see it, The Odyssey will be in theaters starting July 17. Get your plans together.
