Martin Scorsese, noted Academy Award collector, has finally dropped the first trailer for his new 17th Century Japan epic Silence. The long-awaited film, which has been in some form of development since the early '90s, stars Liam Neeson as the missing missionary Father Cristóvão Ferreira. Former Spidey Andrew Garfield and god of goth Adam Driver also star as a pair of Jesuit priests who set out on a harrowing journey to track down their mentor, risking their own lives in the process.

Though Silence hits theaters next month, this trailer is the first real glimpse we've gotten at Scorsese's film since it wrapped production last year. Speaking at a 2015 press conference shortly after shooting ended, Garfield broke down why he felt inspired to join the film as Father Sebastião Rodrigues.

"It's such an agonizing lifetime that he has to live through and yet he wrestles with the greatest and most important and difficult questions that we all wrestle with, which is how to live and how does one live a life of meaning, a life of faith, and does that require you to live in doubt as well?" Garfield said, according toCollider. "That's just scratching the surface of why I felt drawn to this story and this character."

After first screening in advance for 400 Jesuit priests in Rome later this month, Silence hits theaters nationwide Dec. 23.
