Martin Scorsese has additional Oscar glory on his brain, as he just secured an awards season run for his new movie Silence. The historical drama will see a limited release Dec. 23 followed by a nationwide expansion in January, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Up for some new Martin Scorsese around the otherwise worthless holiday season? Of course you are.
Andrew Garfield, Liam Neeson, and Adam Driver star in the film based on Shusaku Endo's 1966 novel. The book of the same name tells the story of 17th century missionaries who go searching for their mentor while doing Christian stuff in Japan. Scorsese penned the script alongside Gangs of New York writer Jay Cocks.
As noted bySlash Film last month, Silence is also rocking the enviable brag of officially being Scorsese's longest movie ever. Silence was confirmed recently to (most likely) rest at a totally doable 3 hours and 15 minutes. The Wolf of Wall Street, a great film not in any way burdened by its length, previously held this surely coveted record.
Silence will be vying for holiday-inspired bucks alongside the sci-fi love of Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt in Passengers and the exact opposite of that from Michael Fassbender in the Assassin's Creed adaptation. But if the previous performance of movies that involve both Scorsese and great lengths are any indication, the competitors won't really matter. The Wolf of Wall Street, after all, bagged a Box Office Mojo-estimated $392 million at the global box office way back in 2013.
