Dru Hammer, mother to Armie Hammer, says the 37-year-old Call Me By Your Name and Sorry to Bother You actor is "happier than he's ever been" after publicly addressing the fallout from his cannibalism and abuse allegations controversy.
Speaking with a TMZ paparazzo on Friday, Dru was asked to elaborate on how the years-long debacle has affected the rest of the family. She was also specifically asked about the purported cannibalism aspect, prompting her to note that her son was "not criminally wrong" in his actions.
"I was very careful during the whole ordeal because my own son didn’t come out and defend himself," Dru, whose new book Hammered is out this month, said. "I had a pastor say one time, 'If you come to your own defense, it’s the only defense you’re ever gonna have.' So we believe that God is our defense, and now the truth is coming out. As he spoke on Piers Morgan and Bill Maher, he was not criminally wrong, he was morally wrong but has changed his life forever. He’s sober and he’s happier than he’s ever been and coming back to God, and that’s the most important thing to me."
In May of last year, shortly after news broke that he would not be facing charges, Armie shared a statement to social media in which he pointed to the "long, difficult" path ahead.
"I am very grateful to the District Attorney for conducting a thorough investigation and coming to the conclusion that I have stood by this entire time, that no crime was committed," Hammer said at the time.
Fast forward to now, and the actor is currently fresh off the release of the aforementioned sit-down with Piers Morgan. As you’ve likely seen, at least in clips, Hammer was directly asked "Are you a cannibal?" during the interview, inspiring the following response:
"No. You know what you have to do to be a cannibal? You have to have actually eaten someone. … Not a question I thought I’d ever have to answer, by the way."
