Nintendo Potentially Slashing Switch 2 Production as Demand Slows

It appears that the honeymoon phase could be coming to an abrupt end for the Nintendo Switch 2 console.

A new report by Bloomberg states that Nintendo is reportedly cutting its production plans for the new console by a whopping 33% this quarter alone. This move follows a drastic and quite surprisingly lackluster holiday season in the US.

While the console completely crushed sales during its initial launch cycle, sales seem to be hitting a wall in the West. Nintendo aimed to churn out 6 million units this quarter, but the target has allegedly changed to just 4 million as demand begins to slow.

The Real Reason Behind The US Sales Downturn

This is a bit of an unusual situation. In Japan, the Switch 2 is nothing short of a certified smash hit, but in the US, the market seems to be feeling the burn of a soft software lineup. Analysts are pointing to a few different things as the main culprits here.

Others have pointed to what some are calling a “Mario void,” as the console launched without a major new Super Mario title. While a Donkey Kong game did take center stage, some players have also raised concerns about the $450 price point, especially without a flagship Mario or Zelda release at launch.

Broader economic pressure in the US may also be contributing to slower sales. Between the rising cost of living and the recent tariffs on essential hardware components, the barrier to entry is significantly higher than it was when the OG Switch launched back in 2017. The PlayStation 5 continues to put up a fight against the Switch 2, even though it is years older, as the number of games and features add more bang for your buck.

Could Hope Be on the Horizon for The Switch 2?

It is not all doom and gloom here, though. Even with a possible production cut, Nintendo is still expected to hit its sales goal of around 19 million units for the fiscal year. One bright spot appears to be Pokémon Pokopia, which has seen strong early reception online. From Squirtles interacting with others to collecting gems and ores, the cozy title has quickly gained attention among players.

Not to mention, fans have Pokémon Champions already on the horizon in just a few short weeks, as well as Winds and Waves slated for 2027.

Nintendo appears to be taking a more cautious approach as it adjusts production plans moving forward.
