Get your Pokéballs ready, as Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have officially confirmed that Pokémon Champions will launch on the Nintendo Switch 1 and 2 on April 8.
While the base game itself is completely “free to start,” there will be a launch-day Starter Pack bundle available for purchase, offering players larger Pokémon storage, exclusive and heart-pumping battle tracks, and additional customization options to get off to a running start.
Next-Gen Enhancements Add Depth and Fun
For those who have gotten their hands on the latest Nintendo Switch 2, Pokémon Champions will not disappoint in terms of graphic quality and polish. Players on the new system can download a free day-one upgrade that delivers significantly enhanced textures, lighting, and smoother frame rates during cinematic move animations.
Despite the visual leap, the game maintains full cross-play and parity with the original Switch, ensuring the competitive community remains unified. This is huge for franchise fans, as it means we finally don’t have to settle for better graphics with lackluster and lonely gameplay.
The game focuses purely on the art of the duel, featuring the classic turn-based combat we all know and love. Whether you’re diving into Ranked, Casual, or your very own Private Battles, you’ll have the choice between both Singles and Doubles formats.
It has also been confirmed that they’re letting us pull our old rosters in via Pokémon HOME, allowing players to import their battle-ready rosters from previous adventures directly into the new title.
This makes the transition into the 2026 competitive season seamless for veteran players, but it will also provide a straightforward and clear, accessible entry point for those deciding to hop on the Pokétrain for the very first time.
Mega Evolutions Return with New Abilities in Tow
Mega Evolutions are finally becoming a part of the meta again, which is huge for those of us who have sunk decades into these titles. The latest gameplay footage highlighted the trio from Pokémon Legends: Z-A trailer, and the new abilities are nothing to scoff at:
- Mega Meganium: Gets "Mega Sol." We’ll have to see the stats, but Meganium finally feels relevant.
- Mega Emboar: "Mold Breaker" is back. Simple, effective, and scary.
- Mega Feraligatr: This is the big one. It has "Dragonize," which flips Normal moves into Dragon-type attacks. Imagine a Dragon-type STAB Extreme Speed or Thrash. That sounds like a nightmare to build a team against. With the next mainline generation, Pokémon Winds and Waves, not scheduled until 2027, Pokémon Champions is set to become the official home of the Pokémon World Championships. This new addition to the franchise offers fans a dedicated competitive playground that they have been requesting for quite some time now.
Pokémon Champions brings the fun of Mega Evolutions and intense ranked battles to Switch on April 8!
