Training Day fans, rejoice.

According to Collider, a prequel to the 2001 film is in the works at Warner Bros. Screenwriter Nick Yarborough was picked by the studio to write the script. It’s early, but sources told Collider that the film will focus on Denzel Washington’s character, Alonzo Harris, in 1992, a decade before the events of the original film. It’ll reportedly be set days before the Rodney King verdict is announced, the spark that set off the Los Angeles riots.

Collider makes it clear that the film is still in its infancy. No director or actors involved with the project have been announced yet, though the website muses that Washington’s son, John David Washington, would be a solid fit for the role.

The original film is considered a classic among fans, grossing over $100 million worldwide. Ethan Hawke was cast as Jake Hoyt, a rookie cop in Los Angeles, eager to become a part of a narcotics squad led by Washington’s Harris.

Antoine Fuqua directed the film, which earned Denzel Washington’s second Oscar — an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Hawke was nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

Yarborough is an up-and-coming screenwriter whose script Letters from Rosemary Kennedy was nominated to the 2016 Blacklist of Hollywood’s best unproduced screenplays, Collider reports.

Back in 2017, a Training Day spinoff television series tried to get off the ground, but CBS canceled the show after one season.
