Nick Cannon is being candid about his parenting style, especially when it comes to how differently he approaches dating for his teenage twins.
During a recent interview with TMZ, Cannon revealed that he’s comfortable with his 15-year-old son, Moroccan, exploring dating, even encouraging it. But when it comes to his daughter, Monroe, he admits the rules are much stricter.
“It’s absolutely a double standard,” Cannon said, acknowledging the contrast in how he treats the situation.
Cannon explained that his stance is rooted in concern, particularly when it comes to protecting his daughter. “I am more protective of my daughter because there’s things out there that I have to protect my daughter from,” he said, pointing to fears about potential harm or dangerous situations.
One of his biggest worries centers around safety. “If somebody puts their hands on my daughter, I’m going to jail,” he said.
At the same time, Cannon made it clear that he views dating differently for his son. He said he isn’t concerned about issues like financial motives, noting that Moroccan comes from a well-established background.
“He got a whole lot of money. His mama’s Mariah Carey,” Cannon said.
Despite his strict stance on Monroe, Cannon said he isn’t completely closed off to the idea of her dating. Instead, he wants open communication and understanding before giving his approval.
“If she can explain to me what’s going to happen on these dates… then she can go,” he said, adding that he wants to make sure she’s prepared and aware of what she’s getting into.
For now, though, Cannon isn’t ready to allow one-on-one dates for his daughter, making it clear that he’s still setting firm boundaries.
“You ain’t going one-on-one with no little bastard anywhere,” he said, drawing a line while also acknowledging that, eventually, he won’t be able to control everything as she gets older.
Cannon added that his goal is to prepare Monroe for the future, especially as she approaches adulthood.
“I want you to have all the questions answered… and you make the best decision,” he said.
