Maury Povich says it took an unexpected encounter with 50 Cent to fully understand his cultural reach.

During a recent conversation with Adam Friedland for Interview, Povich shared a moment that changed how he views his legacy following his retirement.

“I never realized what kind of impact I had,” the longtime talk show host said, explaining that it wasn’t until stepping away from television that he began to recognize how widely his work resonated.

“I was walking down the hall and this guy comes and gives me this big hug and he says, ‘You’re my man,’” Povich recalled. “And I look at him, and it’s 50 Cent.”

The interaction caught Povich off guard, especially given the rapper’s global fame and influence.

“I go, ‘Holy shit. Maybe I did have an impact,’” he added.

Povich, who hosted Maury for more than three decades, became a staple of daytime television, particularly for viral paternity test segments that later found a second life online.

In a conversation with Angela Yee last year, Povich revealed that athletes were among his most dedicated viewers, including entire locker rooms.

“I know a lot of NFL players watch the show,” he said. “They’re in the locker room in the morning, my show’s on … The coaches are out there trying to get them, and they won’t come up ‘til they find out who the father is.”

He also shared that Shaquille O'Neal and his circle would take it a step further, turning the show into a betting game.

“Shaq used to tell me that he and his buddies bet on whether they were the father or not,” Povich said.
