Josh Safdie is bringing back some familiar collaborators, even if audiences didn’t realize it.

While speaking at London’s BFI Southbank, the filmmaker revealed that Robert Pattinson has a secret role in Safdie’s new film, Marty Supreme, the A24 ping-pong drama starring Timothée Chalamet. But Pattinson doesn’t appear on screen; instead, Safdie confirmed the actor makes a surprise voice-only appearance.

“No one knows this, but that voice, the commentator, the umpire, is Pattinson,” Safdie said during the conversation, calling it a hidden “Easter egg” tucked into the movie. Safdie explained he wanted the British Open sequence to feel authentic, but he didn’t have many options in his circle.

“He came and watched some stuff and I was like, I don’t know any British people,” Safdie said. “So he’s the umpire.”

Pattinson can be heard early in the film as the announcer during the British Open semifinals scene, setting the stage before Chalamet’s character Marty Mauser steps into the spotlight and eventually faces Hungarian champ Bela Kletzki, played by Géza Röhrig.

The surprise credit also doubles as a quiet reunion for Safdie and Pattinson, who previously teamed up on the Safdie brothers’ acclaimed 2017 thriller Good Time. In that film, Pattinson starred as Connie, a reckless criminal desperately trying to keep his brother out of prison after a robbery goes sideways.

Safdie’s reveal also gives new context to a moment that left fans baffled last year. In Pattinson’s viral Vanity Fair “Lie Detector Test” video, his co-star Jennifer Lawrence asked him if he’d ever want to work with Josh and Benny Safdie again. Pattinson quickly said yes, but the polygraph examiner labeled his response “deceptive,” causing Pattinson to laugh and react like he was shocked.
