Cristo Fernández, the actor best known for playing the energetic striker Dani Rojas on the hit TV series Ted Lasso, has officially signed with USL Championship club El Paso Locomotive FC, stepping into the world of professional soccer years after becoming a fan favorite on screen.
The club announced Fernández’s signing after the actor completed a two-month trial period with the team. Much like his character in Ted Lasso, Fernández will play as a forward.
“El Paso is getting another attacking threat,” head coach Junior Gonzalez said while praising Fernández’s energy and leadership. Gonzalez also pointed to the actor’s passion for the sport and the positive impact he could bring to the locker room culture. For Fernández, the signing represents a personal dream coming full circle.
“Fútbol has always been a huge part of my life and identity,” he said in a statement. “No matter where life has taken me, the dream of competing professionally never truly left my heart.”
The actor also thanked the organization, coaches, staff, and players for giving him an opportunity to prove himself from the moment he arrived.
Before finding international fame through acting, Fernández had legitimate soccer aspirations growing up in Mexico. He previously played in the youth system for Tecos FC before an injury forced him away from the sport at age 15.
His role as Dani Rojas on Ted Lasso later reconnected him with the game and turned him onto one of the show’s breakout stars.
Now, Fernández will attempt to help boost an El Paso Locomotive side currently sitting near the top of the USL Championship Western Conference standingswith a strong start to the season.
