Angela Simmons has opened up about her initial plan to practice abstinence until marriage, before losing her virginity at the age of 28.
During an appearance on Shannon Sharpe's Club Shay Shay, Simmons recalled being 17 or 18 years old when she, her sister Vanessa and their father Joseph Simmons (aka Rev Run of Run-DMC) had a sit-down conversation in which Run asked them "to hold out, to wait."
"I hold my Dad in a very, very high regard," Simmons explained, before adding that a visit to church also cemented her decision to stay abstinent.
“And then, one day, I remember going to church and they were discussing all these things about waiting for marriage, and I was like, 'You know what, I’mma wait,'" she said around the 39:05 mark in the clip below.
"It went from my dad telling me to hearing it in church, and then I was like, 'I’m just gonna wait until I meet the right person for marriage,'" Simmons continued. "Then, time kept ticking, and then I was like, 'Dang, I’m 28. This is crazy.'"
Simmons lost her virginity to then-fiancé Sutton Tennyson, and welcomed a child.
Simmons previoulsy discussed the change of plans on The Real. "Well you know what, I had a plan," she told the show's hosts. "The plan didn’t work out. And you can’t always plan everything. You know, I met the love of my life and we got engaged. And I waited until 28."
Tennyson was shot and killed outside of his home in 2018 after an argument with a man escalated into gunfire. Michael Williams was sentenced to life in prison in connection to the fatal shooting.
Simmons responded to his sentencing on Instagram at the time, writing: "Justice served today! We got you! We got him."
Looking back, Simmons believes she was able to "openly, freely date" and truly get to know someone by removing sex from the equation.
"I felt confident with my decision. I think that it happened for a reason. I got to openly, freely date, knowing that I’m not doing that, too," she said. "I got to really know people. I think it teaches you how to really get to know somebody without that on the table."
