Even in its second week, Pixar animated film Toy Story 5 dominated new action flick Supergirl at the box office.
According to Deadline, the fifth installment of the Toy Story franchise earned $21 million on Friday (June 26) in 4,425 theaters, with an estimated weekend haul of around $70 million, which would get it to a $292.2 million total. A WB production, Supergirl showed in 3,602 theaters and earned $18 million, bringing its projected first-week earnings to $40 million.
With Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack returning as cast members, Toy Story 5 has become the sixth highest-grossing movie of the year, behind top three recipients, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Michael and Project Hail Mary. Considering the projected first-week numbers of Supergirl, the Craig Gillespie-directed movie could be a box office bomb, as its budget was roughly $186 million.
According to SlashFilm, for the movie to be a blockbuster success, Supergirl will need to gross $425 million worldwide. For context, last year’s Superman achieved $618 million globally, more than double its $225 million budget.
Starring Milly Alcock, Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, Jason Momoa and others, Supergirl marks the second film in James Gunn’s DC Universe.
