Dave Franco says Zac Efron badly injured himself after pulling off the hilarious crotch-grab scene in Neighbors.
While promoting his new horror flick Together on Call Her Daddy, Franco recounted the 2014 buddy comedy and shared how Efron broke his hand during a fight scene. The sequence shows the characters of Teddy Sanders (Efron) and Pete Regazolli (Franco) fighting at a party and refusing to "let go" of each other's private parts.
Around the 42-minute mark of the video below, Call Her Daddy host Alex Cooper asked how the moment led to an injury.
"It definitely wasn’t because my penis was hard," Franco joked. "I'm trying to remember if I was wearing a cup and he came in just really strong. I think it was a dislocated thumb, to be fair, but it happened."
"There's a scene where I think we're both grabbing each other's crotches at the same time," he continued. "And I just think he came in with enough force from the wrong angle, and it's a nice little anecdote now."
Franco added that his character's trick was to go "zen" during the scene and "get hard" on command, which the actor joked he couldn't do in real life.
In 2014, Efron told Yahoo! that his hand was "broken instantly" during the fight scene and that he "made it worse" by continuing with the shoot.
"It sucked, it was a rough night," the actor said. "I went to the hospital and had a metal plate put in my hand at 3 a.m. that night. At work the next day."
