Christopher Nolan still doesn’t have a smartphone or email address, although technology advancements are pushing him to upgrade his lifestyle.
The Odyssey director was a guest on the Monday (May 18) episode of 60 Minutes, where he fessed up to news journalist Scott Pelley about not having used either.
Nolan told Pelly that he has "no interest" in sending emails online but receives "a lot of printed emails" in person. "People are like, 'You've got to take a look at this.' Alright. But no, I've just never been particularly interested in that as a form of communication," Nolan admitted.
Nolan added that although he's never had a smartphone, it has become "harder and harder" to live without one. "The return of the QR code has been quite... quite tricky," he added. "QR code had sort of gone away, but COVID brought it back and now it's kind of everywhere. And if you don't have a smartphone, you can't do much with a QR code."
Nolan also shared that he keeps it old-school and uses a flip-phone while traveling. When Pelly asked if the director intentionally keeps the world "at an appropriate distance" through his few methods of communication, Nolan shared that he's simply "living the same way that we all used to."
"I feel very fortunate to not be wearing the digital shackles, but such is life," the filmmaker concluded.
Last year, The Odyssey star Tom Holland revealed that the film’s cast and crew were given a strict “no phones” policy, which the team sneakily worked their way around.
“We were not allowed our phones on set, so I was not aware of the score,” Holland told GQ about how he kept up with Tottenham Hotspur’s win in the 2025 Europa League.
“I kept going to the sneaky crew members who I knew always had their phones and kept asking them for updates, the actor continued. “I went to my trailer for lunch and caught the last 10 minutes of the game, and my celebration was coming back to set full of energy and doing a really fantastic scene. So that was really fun.”
