For the first time since 1994, neither Phil Mickelson or Tiger Woods will be playing in the Masters Tournament. Mickelson, a three-time Masters champ, announced on April 2 that he would not be part of the tournament due to a personal health matter.
Mickelson’s social media statement said, "Unfortunately, I will not play in the Masters Tournament next week and will be out for an extended period of time as my family continues to navigate a personal health matter. I have great respect for Augusta National Golf Club, and it is definitely the most special week of the year. I wish everyone the best luck and will be watching."
The 55-year-old golfer has only missed one Masters since 1995. According to CBS Sports, “The left-hander is one of eight players to win at least three green jackets and one of seven to claim a Masters championship along with low amateur honors (1991) in his career. Mickelson's 16 finishes inside the top 10 across 32 Masters ranks second behind only Jack Nicklaus and Ben Hogan.”
Fred Ridley, the Augusta National chairman, also released a statement about Mickelson missing this year’s tournament. "We know how much Phil loves the Masters,” he said. “He will be missed by everyone in Augusta next week. He has our complete support as he takes time to be with his family."
Woods will not be playing in the Masters this year, either. A few days after his DUI arrest on March 27, he posted a statement to his social media that said, "I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself today. I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work towards lasting recovery.”
