Lamar Odom Says His ‘Late Brother’ Kobe Bryant Helps Inspire His Sobriety

'I do try to be my best self and practice the Mamba mentality, which has been passed down to me by my late brother,' the former NBA player said.

Lamar Odom’s near-fatal drug overdose took place over ten years ago, but he has recently been reflecting on the incident for the upcoming Netflix documentary, Untold: The Death & Life of Lamar Odom. In the special, Odom will be candidly discussing his seven-year marriage to Khloe Kardashian, his drug use, and his eventual overdose.

As reported by TMZ in 2015, Odom had arrived at a Nevada brothel called the Love Ranch and partied with women for days before being found unconscious in one of the VIP suites. An ambulance transported him to the hospital where he was intubated. During his coma, he had 12 strokes and six heart attacks. The doctors said it was a miracle that he made it out alive.

Since then, Odom has been trying his best to keep healthy, but it hasn’t been easy. Only this January, he was arrested for a DUI in Las Vegas. However, according to Page Six, he is now “56 or 57 days sober.”

“No alcohol, no pot, no marijuana,” he said. “And I’m just [continuing] to grow mentally and spiritually. I do try to be my best self and practice the Mamba mentality, which has been passed down to me by my late brother [Kobe Bryant].”

When Odom was hospitalized, Kobe Bryant rushed to his side. Although Odom says he wasn’t aware that his teammate was visiting him since he was in a coma, the visit was still meaningful.

Odom said, “To know that he was there… When I’m reflecting on it, I think that’s probably what pulled me through. The love that I was getting from everybody. It’s always good to have support, and of course support from your brothers.”

Odom and Bryant were close friends and teammates on the Lakers from 2004 to 2011. Together, they won back-to-back championships in 2009 and 2010.

Moving forward, he said, “I’m trying to read a lot more [and] sharpen up my brain. When I woke up [from the 2015 coma], they told me I would never walk and talk again….And so, every day is a blessing.”

Untold: The Death & Life of Lamar Odom will be streaming on Netflix on March 31.
